Allow Your Child to Make Mistakes Gracefully #8

In this series, we are highlighting compelling reasons to allow your child to make mistakes gracefully.

Compelling Reason #8

Thoughts.

When our children make mistakes and it arouses emotions within us, we get to play with one of the most powerful tools in our parenting tool kit (and in our lives in general), our thoughts.

We can’t control the actions of others, but we can choose our thoughts, every moment of the day. We can view a situation through whatever lens we choose.

For example: Your child is angry and yelling and calls you stupid. You feel angry and insulted and disrespected. The situation is what it is, just the facts, your child is yelling and called you a name. All of the emotions you are experiencing and the thoughts you are thinking about the behavior are yours and you have a choice whether or not to think them. Maybe you’re upset because on some level, you wonder if you really are stupid or you’re afraid your child will call others names and you’re worried what people may think of you as a parent.

It is possible to reach for thoughts that feel better. My child seems frustrated but I’ve seen him work through frustration and come out feeling better or I’m not stupid so why would I let my child’s actions upset me when I know it’s not the truth. He really is finding his way. As simple as it sounds, becoming conscious and deliberate with your thoughts will change your life.

What ways do you sabotage or assist yourself in creating what you want in your parenting relationship? It’s never too late, relief is truly only a thought away.

Posts at Innate Wholeness are shared with the intention of creating a shift in awareness. Please take what speaks to you and leave the rest. Thanks!
