In this series, we are highlighting compelling reasons to allow your child to make mistakes gracefully.
Compelling Reason #9
Emotions.
Emotions often do not get the attention they deserve. In truth, they comprise the most powerful guidance system we have. Both parents and children alike have this system available to live life from a perspective of clarity that has the power to lead one’s life in whatever direction is chosen.
For children to know the value of their emotional guidance, it is helpful (but not absolutely necessary) to have a parent who understands and uses their own emotions for guidance.
Our emotions serve as a signal. Negative emotions let us know we’re off course somehow, that we are not in alignment with what we desire or with the truth of who we really are. The trick is to notice the emotion for what it is, allow yourself to feel it, and choose thoughts that feel better. The better you feel, the more you are in alignment with what it is you desire. Making mistakes and dealing with the resulting emotions will help your child fine tune this amazing power.
It is easy to mistake emotions as something that needs control or management. How are emotions playing into your experience and how can you learn from and work with them?
