Parents can often find themselves feeling indecision and hesitancy in how to act in a certain situation. To bring one’s self to a point of clarity, it may be helpful to trace some feelings back to how mistakes were handled in the family of origin.
One way to create the transformations we want in our families now that we are the parents is to write a positive list reaffirming the value of making mistakes.
For the next few Metamorphosis Moments, we will highlight several compelling reasons to allow your child (and yourself) to mistakes gracefully. Consider each reason a jumping off point to explore your own relationship with perfection and how that comes into play with your children.
Compelling Reason #1
Experience.
Think back for a moment. What life lessons do you remember the most? The ones where someone “explained” the way it is, or the times where you jumped right in and experienced things firsthand?
Personal experience can not be given to someone else. We can certainly share wisdom and information. Our children get to decide what to do with it.
How can you allow your child to experience what life has to offer in the way of mistakes?
